A Continued Discussion from Earlier:

Shaft - One of our regular commentors here posed a great question at the end of another lengthier postings... I thought it a great one to ask and to further the discussion here...

Here's a question "What would the rest of the world do if the U.S decided to start using its own resources and stop importing stuff? Bye Bye world economys.

What do the rest of you think?

I posted a kind of fluff piece today but usually i comment on the issues. I opened up a vote on Howard Dean today also...is he an idiot or a secret Republican operative?

Makes good sausage... :)

David Bowie said...

THAT'S JIMMY DEAN!!!!!

Dan Colgan said...

Oh - there's a difference?

David Bowie said...

Yeah--Jimmy's sausage has LESS BS in it.

Speaking of BS. Any interest in discussing the topic Mr Bowie posed?

No question, the world economy would be significantly destroyed if the US went totally Isolationist. That is assuming we could possibly be self sufficent.

My feeling is that we would bankrupt our own country. Let's face it, most americans would buy american if they could afford it. Most americans can't. With our manditory minimum wages a t-shirt would cost $40.00. Discounters like Wal-Mart etc.. would be chrushed. not ot mention the already hurting american car manufacturers. Unemployment would go through the roof.

It is absurd to think that in today's world America could exist without the products of other countries.

Sorry Anonymous-But that topic was NOT mine--I think PA wrote that one!

Well to give credit where credit is due: Shaftorious is the one who posed the question....

To that regard... (Surprise) I disagree. Are American products superior to other countries? - Then what is the reason they are higher priced? If manufacturer's in America would be forced to pay attention to their local consumer they would be forced to lower they're prices for that exact reason, no one would be able to afford them. In addition it would also improve customer service.

Ever get a bad product? - Take it back to a large scale manufacturer and what do you get... a replacement of the same shoddy product. Every buy something from a small business and have a problem? - That small business owner will go out of his/her way to not only replace the product but to make SURE you're satisfied. Why - you are REALLY what keeps them in business. If you tell someone that you had a bad experience - they tell 5 people. How many people have you heard complain about something at K-Mart or HomeDepot or Walmart - See their profits falling do ya? No

I have to some what agree with Anon. American products are expensive. Take american steal for example. But that is because people expect better pay for less work. We need to get this out of our heads and go back to what made/makes this country the greatest on earth. Drive, determenation and the ability to pick yourself up from your boot straps.

I posed that question to show, as much as liberals hate to admit it, the world needs us a hell of a lot more then we need them.

Dan Colgan said...

WHAT!?? - Well I don't like you anymore! :)

Shafter79 said...

Why don't you like me? It's a fact that the american steal unions have driven the price of american steal up. To combat the prices they put a higher tarrifs on foriegn steal.

Dan Colgan said...

Just joking my friend... You disagreed with me! - some feel as though just because they disagree with me here that they should go on a personal attack rather simply making their point with facts :) I always put a smile when I'm joking...

How much steel do you think the US imports in comparison to what we export? (I don't know I am simply asking) - My question would be really..IF...american car manufactuerers actually build cars IN AMERICA with AMERICAN PARTS made by AMERICAN AUTOWORKERS... (as well as other steel consumers in other industries) how much steel would we really need to import from other countries and how much demand would there be if they did not lower their "inflated" prices. Industries would find ways to accomodate if they didn't

Shafter79 said...

We could make more then enough steal here to supply ourselves. The problem, specifically with the steal industry, they have unions that demand more pay for less production.

Dan Colgan said...

Well that would definitely be a hindrance to sole-producing if unions stand in the way...
