A recent poll by Ipsos highlights a huge problem in our society. The Supreme Court as well as our legislators are so out of step with the average American that you would think by a large majority we are a nation of unfeeling and spiritually lacking ninnys.
To the contrary, this poll confirms something that I've held dearly and wrote about many times that would it be left to referendum OR better yet - should the American people get off their duffs and actually VOTE!, issues such as gun control, abortion, and religion in schools would be wiped from the political spectrum once and for all. What are your thoughts?

I could not agree more, but the major problem is that the American people, whether people of faith or not, have gotten so indifferent and complacient, getting them off their butts and out to the polls will not be an easy task. A little example: I was active with my local humane society auxiliary, and was trying to get those folks to write to their elected officials. The response I got was--couldn't you just give us a form letter to sign and mail in? This unfortunately is the attitude we are dealing with, but on a much larger scale. Undoing this mindset will be very difficult.
High School mentality - The smallest number of people make things happen and the rest just go along for the ride?
OK - Well that's not the country I want to be apart of so how does it change? -
Interesting term. Perhaps one way to start the change is through the number of persons visiting this blog-site, and I have noticed that the numbers are growing. Although only a few choose to comment, people are reading the postings and I'd like to think that they are having an impact. We discussed at my Church recently the 80/20 rule, or maybe more accurately the 20/80 rule. That is 20% of the people will do 80% of the work. This is simply not going to get the job done in this country. When our country was founded, it was established as a republic, rather than a democracy. This requires its citizens to be aware of the issues and the positions of their leaders. Unfortunately we have gotten into a majority rule rut, and we have departed from the original intent the Founding Fathers had for our country over two centuries ago. I guess we make things change one issue at a time.
The problem with attempting to make things change one issue at a time is that in this day and age, people do not look at things issue by issue... they look at blocking "issues" in an attempt to get the upper hand on the big things. (Congress that is) - You have an excellent point that the voters don't have a grasp of what their "Representative's" positions are. That is both the fault of the voter for their inattentiveness and the smoke screen of the politicians.
Do you ever get the feeling of a drowning man grasping for a straw? I think this best describes our situation, such as it is.
I agree with what your saying, but I don't see Americans doing anything about it. We as a country are lazy when it comes to 'standing up' about what we believe in. Sadly so...
Mr. Workman: Your comment speaks volumes for why our country is in such a mess. If we as a people would realize the power we have and chose to use it, the powers that be would have no choice but to listen. The issues cited in PA's commentary would only be the beginning.
I think most problems with american is they fear being labled.If they stand up for there religion they're a zealout. If the stand up for the right to bare arms they're militia men (not that I disagree with the militia). If they stand up against abortion they are abressive to women. If they disagree with affirmative action they are racists. This goes back to one of my previous opinions and the term "Independent". People do not want to be labeled in a bad light. Wether it is true or untrue.
