In a discussion recently with one of my liberal friends (yes I have liberal friends :)) a subject came up and I thought it a good topic here so here goes:
What do I want my government to do for me? -
I would like my government both at the State and Federal level to get the hell out of my life...get out of my religion, get out of my wallet, get out of my job, get out of my car... get OUT PERIOD. I don't want them telling me how I can best use my income for retirement, I don't want them telling me how much of my land should be set aside for right-of-ways, I don't want them telling me how much I should be giving to the needy in our society, I don't want them telling me how much I should pay in taxes on my home so that Johnny can go to public school free of charge! while my three daughters go to a private school so that I can be assured of the Freedom of Religion that is guaranteed to me in the Constitution. How's that for being clear my friend? whew....... sorry I just had to get that all out.
If you couldn't tell from the above, for the record I am against government involvement in our lives. I would simply like to go back to the way it was supposed to be 229 years ago. A place where we are free. (Before I get barraged with insults about if I don't like it I can leave... I'm out to make the best place on earth better for everyone... and frankly I haven't ranted for a long while and it was building up :))

Oh My PA-do I hear Peter Finch's immortal quote from the movie "Network" coming through loud and clear--"I'M MAD AS HELL AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE"!!!
BTW: Tell me it's not so--you have liberal friends?????? (ha ha)
Well said!!
I agree on everything except for taxes...I think there should be some put aside for unemployment, but before anyone comes back with a "cradle to grave" argument, this isn't and shouldn't be anything more than a social insurance, a pittance with which people could eat until they can find a job. People shouldn't have to starve in America, especially when unemployment benefits represent such a small part of taxes.
I have no problem with unemployment "insurance" provided I am not DEMANDED to pay into it. If I do not then I am out in the cold should I lose my job. It should be like life insurance or health insurance. This is my whole problem with government in general - they chose to extract from us all for everyone else (isn't that socialism?)
It's not governments place to be delving into social welfare in the first place - they were formed to "provide for the common defense" - not mandate taxes on me that I don't agree with - seems to me we had a party over some tea a while back for just that reason.
Well pa-c to be fair to our current system, welfare and unemployment benefits really don't work the same way that socialism does. Socialism will keep you in the cradle for your entire life. If you're put out of work, they'll pay your wages for months, even years. Our system is completely different. You need to have a job to lose a job, and those that are living from this aren't exactly putting on the ritz...It certainly doesn't promote lazyness (not that you said it did, but this is a common argument against welfare). But our country is so great that to have people starving and without anywhere to turn is just unacceptable, and reflects badly towards every wage-earning man here.
Sometimes you have to be realistic...nobody wants to "buy in" to unemployment insurance until they're out of a job. It doesn't work that way.
I don't really understand the reference to the revolutionary war...it was fought over taxation without any say in government. Both the left and the right support welfare in varying degrees.
And I apologize in advance if I have gone too far with anything, I'm only in this for the intellectual stimulation.
Anon, I am fully aware of the "intent" of welfare and unemployment but the intent and reality are two separate things in this world. In their truest definition, welfare and unemployment are socialist programs. They are directed and regulated by the government and citizens are forced to contribute to their financial solvency.
I repeat again that government should stay out of this type of thing. If individual communities desire to provide for a common welfare for their brethren then so be it they can do so but it is simply not the job of governments.
re: Unemployment...
If a company such as AllState wants to take on the burden of providing a product called "Unemployment Insurance" then that is where this type of thing should reside. I could then chose to participate or not and be responsible for my own decision instead of being coerced into providing coverage for everyone.
As far as my Revolution reference... The whole point of the revolution was that we were being forced by a monarchy to pay for things that we had no say in - this continues in some respects today in our "representative" democracy.
