Patriot news posting...
See the above link to an article in today's Patriot News about Sunday beer sales. Quite frankly, I will never understand the logic of our so-called Legislators. With all the clamoring about DUI and alcohol related deaths from car accidents, one just has to ask--WHAT ARE YOU THINKING???
Well, were politicians are concerned--I suspect there is NO such thing as logic--Gee, I wonder what Mr. Spock would say??

Where's The Logic??? (Maybe there just isn't any?)

OK - they tell me that we are too agreeable so he's one to appease the masses....
Mr. Bowie I DO NOT AGree with your assessment. Alcohol sales via beer distributors on Sundays will have virtually no effect on dui arrests either positively or negatively. What this legislation does do though is place beer distributors on even ground with other states who have for years had a tremendous advantage of Sunday sales. In addition, it is not the place that sells contained case- beer, that contributes to the drunk driving problem, it is the idiot who cannot decipher that they've had too much to drink.
If you want to place an added protection ... put the perview on the bar owners who are open until 2 AM to keep the drunks from driving. Bigger fines and stiffer penalties for allowing someone to leave your establishment intoxicated and get into a car should be punishable. They have bouncers to help deal with fighting.. survailance could also be established.
Amazing isn't it we can disagree and still be civil to one another!!
Oh Shutup you pulpit pounder :) LOL
Very Funny!!
Thought you'd like that ..
Just for the record PA, it's not only the DUI arrests which concern me but it is the increased availability of the stuff. I just don't think we need beer in the local TH or 7/11. So, sorry this old-fashioned, fuddy-duddy, right-wing arrogant pulpit-ponder just sees too many potential problems here. LSHISOTS!
Well there are inherant problems that I will admit, but there are also inherent problems when you put teenagers together at a dance but find me a high school that doesn't encourage dances... There's potential problems when you place cars on the street, heck theres potential problems when you put your suitcase on an airline for that matter...
Commerce should not be restricted because of the stupidity of people.
I'm siding with PA on this. I figured you fellas were always on the same side... Oh well.
Well, we've appeased the masses long enough, because I don't disagree. The stupidity of the people is one thing, but the stupidity of the Legislature is quite another. I suspect that a program can be implemented such as is being used with tobacco sales with persons having to show ID before being allowed to make a purchase.
You already have to show id to buy beer...
Go figure-huh quail????
Apparently you're trying to make a point that I missed. You want to rewind it, slow it down, and try again?
You came into this discussion mid-stream quail, I was suggesting this type of program should TH's or 7/11's get into this. I apologize if I wasn't clear about that.
OK-my point was that "kids" have to be 18 and must show ID before they can purchase tobacco products. I was suggesting that a similar program could be developed for persons 21 to show ID prior to making a purchase at a TH or other convenience store. Obviously this would be a safeguard to persons "underage" trying to purchase beer.
Well No matter where beer or alcohol etc is sold, there better be an ID shown.
I totally agree!
However, this actually takes us away from the original topic. I for once am in agreement with the legislature. I think if you are going to allow alcohol sales on Sunday then the playing field needs to be leveled to include all establishments.
I DO NOT agree that doing so will encourage any further abuse of the beverage or increase the number of accidents caused by alcohol. There's just as much an opportunity to buy the beer on Saturday or any other day of the week and sit and get messed up and then get in the car
I live in South Carolina, and IDing for beer, and cigarettes has been in place as long as I can remember. If you don't have that in PA, you definately should.
There is most definitely an ID process in place. Currently PA only allows take-out sale of alcohol in state-run liquor stores and beer sales at distributors by the case and bars limiteed to 2 six packs. - There isn't any current legislation that I'm aware of to change that but what DB is referring to is if they did we would need strict regulation by convienience stores in doing so...
OK PA-I'm getting your point. I hadn't considered the alcohol sales other than beer, and I agree that would level the playing field. BTW: I was talking about this with the Manager of the TH just down the street from my home, and he indicated that if the legislation passes the "parent-company" for TH is going to try some "test" markets. He wasn't thrilled with the prospect. I'm all for open and unrestricted commerce, I just hope this dosen't turn into a royal nightmare!
I live in Philly, and if anyone around here wants beer on a Sunday, they merely need to drive over a bridge to the local Jersey distributor. The whole thing about the state ownership of the liquer stores and regulation of alcohol is too much government control. The argument about leveraging the wineries for lower prices is a load of crock. Jersey is always cheaper than a PA state store or PA beer distributor because they are privately owned and subject to the economic market. It is time the state privatizes all the beer and liquer sales in the state.
I could not agree with the last part of your comment more, Paul--I think the State should have gotten out of the liquor business years ago!!!
