I find it puzzling that with the most advanced and experienced military in the world and a country with relationships on either land border which can still be classified as "friendly" (Is Canada or Mexico in any position to invade America?) why is it that we cannot seal our borders? Why can we not simply cut off unauthorized individuals from entering the country? It perplexes me that we would not use our own military to protect the most fundamental of perimeters.
I am fully aware of the laws restricting our Military being used in policing our citizens (remember the fully-automatic machine-guns at the airport terminals after 9-11?) but that's not what we're talking about here. It seems not only feasible but legitimate to use them to stop drug traffic, to stop illegals from entering the country and using up very valuable resources - all at taxpayers' expense.
If you don't have a valid visa or passport, you don't get in, that simple. If you want to become a citizen of the United States - FANTASTIC - we'll help you but you WILL go through the proper channels to achieve it. Meanwhile if you think you’re going to cross over and enjoy the freedoms and protections without putting in the effort to be assimilated and learn the language and customs... your butt is back on the dingy that brought you here immediately.

I think a fair majority of the legals don't take the time to learn our language... I see your point to a degree, but don't you think the military has more important things to do. What about increasing border police, or DEA agents. Our policing officers are specialized. If we have a specific problem, we should use the right agency to solve it. The military should be free up to take care of the bigGER fish.
OK - At the moment I'd like to see some "entity" assume a greater roll. Our border patrols are under-staffed and under-funded.
If we could boost these units to have the number capable of adequately performing the duty then I'm in agreement.
I don't hear anything though out of Washington that even hints to this idea. -
OK-Here's an off the wall thought for whatever it may be worth--What about using the National Guard in addition to the Border Patrol? I haven't looked at the pending legislation, I think the House Bill is over 150 pages long. I haven't seen the Senate Bill yet, but I'll bet it's about as long.
Greetings--As one contributor to the site, I'm glad you find the blog interesting. I hope you visit often and share some of your insights on the issues that are discussed here.
Keep the military out of law enforcement, they have enough to do. There are good reasons the Army is not allowed to perform police functions.
You're probably right, gort, I was just tossing out an idea for discussion. But it is rather obvious that the Border Patrol alone cannot deal with the problem of "illegals" crossing into the US.
I refuse to believe that with all the resources that the government has that this problem could not be dealt with in an orderly way. I don’t fault people for wanting to come to America. They want in for the same reasons my grandparents crossed the sea. The fact that many businesses (especially farms) are dependent on a cheap source of labor has to influence the decision not to address this problem. If the border patrol needs more people and money it should be provided. The Republicans don’t seem to mind borrowing money for everything else.
Republicans Gort? - Let's not point fingers in one direction. The Clinton administration had 8 years to do something as well...
Lets just suffice to say that politicians in general stink at getting anything productive done any more.
PA your last sentence speaks volumes to the sad state of affairs this country is in!!
PA, of course Clinton had 8 years to deal with this. And Bush 41 had 4 years, Reagan 8 years and so on. My point is if there is the political will to deal with this it will get done. The Republicans are in charge and make the most noise about immigration. They should put up or shut up.
As should the democrats which hold things up from getting accomplished in the Senate no matter what subject it is
A novel concept Anon2, but one question a "guest" of who? Please don't tell me it's the American taxpayer--I'm close to agreeing with you!!(sorry I got just a little sarcastic!)
If you want to visit our country - fantastic - 6 weeks of using our resources is plenty for me,, want to stay longer than that? You need to be a citizen and learn the language.
I'm thinking, perhaps that's what Anon2 meant by "guest"? I'm hoping so anyway! Visiting is fine--but if your planning to make the USA your home then be prepared to become a citizen, and learn the language. We would be expected to do the same if we went to another country to live. RIGHT-ON PA! (Personal note: I know a couple who were missionaries in Japan for 45 years. They did not become citizens of the country, but they certainly learned the language!!)
