Please see the above link from today's Washington Times, which states that Chief Justice William Rehnquist is NOT planning to retire, despite speculations to the contrary.
Said the Chief Justice: "I want to put to rest the speculation and unfounded rumors of my imminent retirement," he said in the brief statement. "I will continue to perform my duties as chief justice as long as my health permits."
I think this says it all!!

I'm sure glad I found this blog instead of RAC against America.
Brainhell,
See moveon.org for that kind of thing.
"…as long as my health permits."
Unfortunately, that might not be as long as he makes it sound, with all the severe health problems he's had over the years. Despite his statement, we should still be actively working to get a good replacement for him.
Let me throw my thought in here. Mr.Rehnquist is a very intelligent and insightful man. He knew that President Bush would be in for a fight regardless of his selection but also for chief justice.
(this part is speculation) - If he knew SDO was going to retire before it was made public it behooved him to fuel the fire on speculation that he would be the first to retire. This would naturally give the american people a preview of the democrat strategy but would not greatly effect the overall complexity of the court since the Chief is staunch conservative.
I truly believe that SDO thought Mr. Rehnquist was going to announce the same week as she but he backed out after she announced.
What this does is provide President Bush a clear victory on Roe V. Wade when confirmation occurs in October. O'Connor held the key.
Doesn't seem like far-fetched speculation to me, PA, and I base that observation on the possibility of the President nominating a conservative to replace SDO (I love acronymns), and elevating either Clarence Thomas or Antonin Scalia to the position of Chief Justice, should Rhenquist decide to retire. In any event, I think the Democrats have already shown their hand, with the so-called compromise on the Brown, Owen & Pryor confirmations. I think we can expect more of the same from the Chuck Schumer's of the world. God help us all!
