I thought it appropriate to post a response I received today from Mr. Steve Maitland (Rep. 91st District of Pennsylvania) in regards to my condemnation of his voting yes for the Legislative pay raise in PA. From the looks of this reply - there is very little remorse or justifiable explanation for this action...

Dear Mr. Colgan:
First, let me say that I liked your letter to the editor replying to
Herb Riede. As for the pay raise, 8 other people in Adams County
received an increase. I felt they deserved it. They are Mark Beachat,
Dan Bowman, Tom Carr, John Zepp, John Kuhn, Mike George, Bob Bigham and
Shawn Wagner. I had no problem feeding my family on the old salary -
the increase was driven by the Philadelphians whose salary was falling
below the average in their area. When we caucused on it, I knew it
would pass. I also knew if it passed, I would take it. Therefore, in
order to reward our judicial officials for good work and in order not to
look like a hypocrite, I voted yes.
Thanks for your past support. I hope I can earn it back.
Sincerely,
Steve Maitland

Mr. Steve Maitland,
I truly hope for your sake that you have seen the error of your
ways as you and Mr. (Terry) Punt have most likely voted away your
political futures. I am a lifelong republican and I voted for
you and Mr. Punt numerous times so I feel it only right to
let you know that the recent extortion you extracted from the
citizens of Pennsylvania was the legislators' biggest mistake
in the last half century.
You have pissed on the people of Pennsylvania one too many
times while avoiding the issue of property taxes which are
forcing the elderly and the low-income worker out of their
homes. You have failed to reign in school districts and
allowed them to stick it to us time and time again .
Well again fair warning. My suggestion to you would be that
you get out in front of the effort to repeal the wage increase
immediately otherwise I and currently about 300 of my close
(Friends) Pennsylvania voters (so far) will not rest until you
are sent packing.
This must be reversed now and actual reform must take place in
regards to property taxes. Save your breath telling me your
doing this and that and this.... You best get your buddies in
Harrisburg to ACCOMPLISH something or you WILL be finding new
work.
Sincerely
Daniel P Colgan

I was surprised you got such a candid reply, although it sounded alot like he was trying to rationalize why he voted for the pay raise. And I took notice to the fact that once he realized that it was going to pass, that he was going to accept the raise-like that was a big shock. Since he claims that there was no problem feeding his family on the "old" salary the hypocracy, from where I sit was voting for the raise in the first place. Wouldn't you agree? Your thoughts?
That is exactly the same thought I had - the hypocracy is accepting a raise that he knew he didn't warrant
I implore each of you from Pennsylvania to write a similar email or fax to your representatives today, right now.
The more people we get on this wagon the more chance we have to make some change
Here's a link to a Patriot-News Article (7/14/2005) concerning who will and will not take the pay raise. Either way your Representatives and Senators in Harrisburg NEED TO HEAR FROM YOU.

If anyone is interested there is a group called pacleansweep, which is dedicated to repealing the wage increase and removing those that voted for it. This is a non-partisan group.
