I'm sure that this blog can come to a consensus on this one. How many people would like to vote themselves a $12,000 raise at 2 o'clock in the morning while their boss slept? Huh what do ya say?, easy now,...don't everybody push and shove...
The State House and Senate in Pennsylvania did it again to us people. I thought in '95 when they shoved a brick hard up our budget that we'd never let that happen again. I've been saying for months that this was going to happen if we didn't get out in numbers - especially with Fast Eddie in there. And I am right YET AGAIN!
Why do "we the people" sit back and let this happen to us? - It must be stopped. We are a government "Of the People, By the People, For the People" - and our "people" are screwing us hard. - Start making phone calls, sending letters to the editor, form grassroots groups and flood the State House with Email! and tell these people to START DOING SOMETHING PRODUCTIVE TO REDUCE PROPERTY TAXES, OVERALL TAXES, GOVERNMENT SPENDING - tell them how you feel - you want a start??? - email me dpcolgan@hotmail.com
Sign Petition -
I mean I know they're up there in Harrisburg arduously debating critical bills like the "dog seatbelt law" but come on! SEND THESE IDIOTS HOME- THE WHOLE KIT AND KIBBLE !

Did we forget about "Fast Eddie's" 13% raise of about $21K this raises his base salary from $155,572 to $176,800????? Lord knows, he does less than the Legislature--Maybe he can get a "job" as a sports caster with the Eagles after he's been taken out of the Governor's Mansion next year. (I HOPE!!!)
"we can learn again to argue without hate and separate the person from the position. It has to start somewhere....let's start here, now"
Idiots? Hmmm...
Would you prefer "Girlie-Men"? - How about "over-achievers in mediocrity"
Splitcat: I'd like to ask you how you would feel if one of your employees at 2 o'clock in the morning gave himself at 16% raise... What would be your next action? - FIRE HIM correct? - Anyone who can hem and haw for literally years on issues that are vital to the people of pennsylvania including ones where senior citizens and the working poor are loosing their homes, and then under the cover of darkness give themselves a huge raise - IS AN IDIOT and deserves to be fired!
Excellent editorial in the Hanover Evening Sun (did I actually say that with a straight face?, you ask) .. but nonetheless here's a link

Having been out of that rat race for over two years, I had forgotten about the "per-diem" This makes the whole pay raise issue even worse!!!
BTW--Let's do a little math folks-$129 per day multiplied by 74 days--that's another $9,546.00 tacked on to their base salary, if the Member lives over 50 miles away from Harrisburg- not to mention the $7,800 in vehicle expenses--WHAT A RACKET! And WE as taxpayers do not have a right to be outraged by this??? Give me a break! CALLING THEM KNUCKLE-HEADS AND IDIOTS IS MILD COMPARED TO SOME OTHER THINGS THAT HAVE CROSSED MY MIND. But I won't put that kind of language on this site.
FYI: I didn't write the description that is posted as the header for your blog. Your point of view is completely legitimate; in fact, I agree with it. I merely wanted to point out the apparent disconnect between the stated purpose of your blog and the language used to make your points. If I created a blog about cats and all my posts were about dogs I hope someone would call me on it.
Your point is well taken splitcat, but I make no apologies for the blunt approach, and I'm sure that PA Conservative will agree with me on that, although I do not presume to speak for him. And just for the record, bluntness does not equate with "hate," but I just call it as I see it, and I think I'm more than qualified to make some of the judgments I've expressed, considering I spent 32 years in State Government. So if it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, I'm going to call it a duck--and that applies to knuckle-heads and idiots too!
Your interpretation of hate splitcat is one of the problems with our "feel-good" society. Just because I point out that someone is acting less than intelligently (thus an idiot) does not in any way shape of form mean that I HATE THEM personally. I think the idiotic crap that these people do under the guise of legislation is just that and thus their actions make them idiots.
It doesn't mean I want harm to come of them, it means that they need to go home and be someone's bookkeeper or lawyer and stop representing my interests.
pa-conservative: actually, the interpretation of "hate" comes from whomever wrote your blog description: "and separate the person from the position". Both you and Mr.Bowie equated the position "a raise for ourselves is a good idea" with the person being an idiot and knuckleheads. That is NOT separating the person from the position. You could say that the idea is idiotic or knuckleheaded (according to your own stated principles) but you should not (according to your stated principles) state that they personally are idiots and knuckleheads. Maybe you should edit your blog subtitle to something like, "Sticks and Stones might break their bones but names will never hurt them." I personally don't believe that it is productive rhetoric...it doesn't prove any points, it just becomes a p***ing contest to see who can type in ALL CAPS THE LONGEST OR USE THE MOST PUNCTUATION!!!!!!!!
splitcat: This was a portion of my comment from the preceding post: "The Legislature is in Harrisburg How Long?"
I'm assuming that you are NOT from Pennsylvania, so please allow me to introduce you to the concept that the position makes the person, and in this case the term knuckle-head is most appropriate. 253 knuckle-heads to be exact, which is the compliment of the PA General Assembly. Any group of presumed intelligent people in a Legislative Body who cannot conduct themselves with decorum and respect when doing their "jobs" do not deserve to have those jobs, especially when the decisions they make have far reaching implications and consequences. Whether you approve of my "label" or not it is simply the reality of this situation. Besides who ever heard of being able to vote one's self a 16% pay raise for a glorified part-time job???--THIS IS ABSOLUTELY LUDICROUS!!
BTW: Where did you get this irritating tendency for over-analysis anyway?
Mr. Bowie,
I see: in Pennsylvania the position makes the person; therefore, if you despise the position, you are free to despise the person. Did I get that right? So the idea that "we can learn again to argue without hate and separate the person from the position" just hasn't been learned in Penn.?
As for the issue itself, I agree that a 16% pay raise is ridiculous and idiotic. I too would be embarrassed if my state had the 2nd highest paid legislature. Clearly, your state needs more conservatives like you keeping tabs on them. Our citizenship overall is very ignorant of current events. If there were more people like you then, perhaps, a new legislature could be elected.
However, I don't think that people "in the middle" will be converted by vitriol...most people are put off by that. I think your cause would be better served by channeling your passion into reasoned, yet still passsionate, responses. I thinke it would be more productive to live up to the high ideal you created in your blog's subtitle.
BTW: "Where did you get this irritating tendency for over-analysis anyway?" My dad. I am a teacher and it annoys my students too. And my wife.
You're only partialy right splitcat--I despise the arrogance of the person that allows them to presume that they deserve more than they are actually worth, based on the job they do. I worked for the Commonwealth of PA for 32 years and during that time I saw a double-digit raise only 1 time. I suppose that's better than most. I would like to see the so-called "leaders" support a family, on a minimum wage salary job for at least one year, maybe then they would begin to understand what the average person has to deal with day to day. Most folks are not as fortunate as I was to have State-paid benefits, but I worked many years to get them, and I'm thankful that they are there. You touch on a critical point with your observation of the overall ignorance of the citizenry, and this is truly unfortunate. I admit that my anger & frustration sometimes gets the best of me, and that too is unfortunate, but I guess it is a by-product of all those years in State Service. I took pride in the job I did, and I expect that the Members of our Legislature should do the same, without patting themselves on the back, with exhorbidant raises, at the expense of the taxpayer.
BTW--I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who annoys his wife. And in case I didn't mention it, your arguments are well taken, and I respect your position. I look forward to our next "debate." Maybe I'll be less angry and frustrated.
Mr. Bowie,
Very well put. I don't think I can add anything to that. I personally think it is okay to criticize a character flaw in a political leader when that flaw leads to poor decisions (ie arrogance=pay raise or lust=perjury). At same time, I don't think it is productive to call someone a name based upon their actions (ie pay raise=idiot or perjury=slimeball), though it might make us feel better to do so. Do we agree on that?
Oh, I meant that MY "irritating tendency for over-analysis" annoys my wife.
We absolutely agree on that!
Well to make you feel better,... "the ACTIONS of the State senate and house is idiotic and due to repeated actions of the like the resulting action that must be accomplished is their ouster from public office"
How's that, better?
