The title to this posting raises in my judgment a critical question, because the President had stated that his nomination to the Supreme Court would be a person that is in the mold of Justice Antonin Scalia and Justice Clarence Thomas. Since he did not do this with his appointment of Harriet Miers, I am justifiably concerned.
As I have stated many times before, America stands at a great moral crossroads, and having made that important point, I believe this is not the time for making appointments to the High Court merely to appease the Liberal Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee and in the Full Senate.
There are major issues facing our country, and what is needed is strong moral conservative leadership in all branches of our Government, especially in our Courts and most certainly on the Supreme Court of the United States.
Although I supported President Bush in 2000 and in 2004 I am disappointed with this nomination, however whether or not this turns out to be an outright betrayal to conservatives in America remains to be seen. On that score, the jury is still out.

HAS THE PRESIDENT BETRAYED CONSERVATIVES?

Good grief, squirrel, if you as a liberal are not happy with this pick, I, as a conservative should be outraged. But in all honesty, and I'm not making excuses, but I haven't even heard of Harriet Miers prior to her nomination to the Court. As a paper trail goes, there is even less of one as with John Roberts, so it is hard to form an informed judgment about what her positions are on the major issues. Please be assured that I will check out the website you referenced in your comment and will pass it on to others who share my views. I do find it somewhat curious that the President picked someone who was NOT already a sitting Judge. I thought that at least was some kind of pre-requisite for being nominated to the Supreme Court, but I guess my ignorance about these things is showing a little. Thanks for the input.
Fred Barnes from the Weekly Standard points out that President Bush, in the 6 and a half years as president as well as his two terms as Governor of Texas has consistently appointed staunchly conservative judges at all levels. Why would he turn tail at this point and run? I for one am EXTREMELY anxious about this appointment to the highest court. It screams of payback and appeasement. Hell I've held nothing back saying he abandoned conservatives altogether... however after pondering on this for the evening, I am willing to let this play out for a few days before I call for his impeachment. (which is something I was screaming for at 8:30 am yesterday)
A Supreme Court Justice can be anyone at all that the President choses. It is not required to have any legal background or training whatsoever. Curious though is that their sole job is to "interpret the law". Seems to me that would dictate some form of legal UNDERSTANDING right?...huh shows you what we know
That's what I thought, PA. How do we determine what type of judicial temperment Harriet Miers has if there is NO "opinion" trail to follow. Besides, Chuck Schumer has to find out if she's some kind of "ideologue!" (LOL)
The biggest thing that troubles me is the amount of pure conservative leaders who agree with me and have come out against this nominee... Rush Limbaugh, Bill Kristol, Sean Hannity, Anne Coulter. All of these individuals have slammed the pick. Most if not all of them have a reputation of knowing all the facts before jumping to a conclusion... hense the trouble.
In addition, if Harry Reid is coming out in favor of her - shouldn't that alone be a red flag???
Don't know much about Bill Kristol or Ann Coulter, although I have heard of her. If Rush and Sean Hannity are criticizing this nomination, that's more of a red flag for me that Harry Reid's support. If Kennedy or Schumer announce their support for Miers, then I'm really going to be worried.
