As evident by my postings here, I am a conservative Republican who backs President Bush in his fight against terrorism. I am however (unlike some of my fellow conservative bloggers) able to "call a spade a spade". Our constitution clearly states that NO government official can violate the privacy of a citizen of the United States. It is one of our founding principles. The President's "Intelligence Department" program that instigates monitoring of US phone conversations blatently violates the heart of this principle, not just the spirit. It seems the term reasonable suspicion has morphed into more of a "well he/she might...so we better check just in case" mentality.
The American people are to blame. While it is the political spectrum in Washington that is supposed to keep itself in check, "we the people" must force our elected officials to conform to the document which they have pledged to "Protect and serve". We must do it at the ballot box just as the Constitution dictates, however we must also be cognisant of the fact that the established order in Washington (the insiders) and those who have been around DC are all contributors and conspirators in this and we cannot afford to simply replace one felon for another. Let's not kid ourselves folks, our elected officials when they step over the bounds of the constitution are just that, felons.
I advocate not so much a throw the bums out philosophy but more of a replace the bums with intelligent patriots who understand the role of government. They work for us and let's never forget that.
