Former state legislators, who either retired from the General Assembly or were defeated in their re-election bids are reaping a wind-fall in lump sum payments and pension benefits--to the tune of about $4 Million dollars.
I don't have a problem with the procedure, but the amounts they are collecting are aboslutely obscene. For example: Representative Elinor Z. Taylor will be receiving an annual pension of 131,000 that equates to $10,916 per month. In addition she is permitted under the regulations of the State Employees Retirement System to withdraw all or a portion of the monies she contributed over her years in the Legislature. That's going to amount to a one-time check in the amount of $187,000. And she's not the only one who will be reaping such large retirement benefits. There are many others who will be collecting staggering amounts of money as they leave the "cushy" offices in the State Capitol.
I can assure you that the average "rank-and-file" state employee when he or she reaches their time to retire from Government service will not see such large checks. I know I didn't after my 32 years of service to my Commonwealth. Just to keep the record straight comparing my pension to that of former Representative Taylor--well she's making 9 times of my monthly pension.
Why, you may ask am I so upset by this, well I guess it's July, 2005 that keeps coming back to my memory, and their absolute arrogance at voting themselves an unwarranted pay raise in the dead of night. The fact that it was ultimately repealed, and some of them, when they got caught paid the money back is in my judgment totally irrelevant.
WE THE PEOPLE of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the individuals who these 253 so-called leaders are supposed to represent, need to keep informed about the happenings under the Dome in Harrisburg, and we should not hesitate to let them know when we think they're not doing the job WE THE PEOPLE elected them to do. This is not only our right, but it is our responsibility as a citizen of Pennsylvania and of the United States of America!
