There have been calls since 9/11 and even before for the establishment of a national ID card that would be proof of your eligibility for any government or state benefit program. My question to them would be isn't that already established? - Our Social Security Number is now required of all children born in the United States before their first birthday. Most are given a number before they are even discharged from the hospital. While I am EXTREMELY wary of any type of number that can track a person ala George Orwell, I am also loath of another potentially out of control program that I'll (we'll) have to overpay for later.
Couldn't that card program simply be modified and combine the process of similar identification programs such as state driver's licenses where the card would have be updated (or renewed) every 4 or 6 years. Or better yet, have the persons' social security number embedded on the chips on state driver's licenses.
It could then be expanded to satisfy even more stringent identification methods such as finger print recognition, etc. This is all being said to outline that there are ways to keep us all safe without putting up barbed wire around our country's borders. Although absent a true immigration policy that may be a good first step

Don't We Already Have A National ID Program

Careful. If the Liberals have their way, we'll be giving these ID's to illegal aliens. If they have their way, we might just give id's to everyone in Mexico in case they decide to illegally cross the border.
And next thing they'll be getting the Social Security that WE worked for. (half sarcastic-half pi##ed off)
