WHEN IS A RAISE NOT A RAISE???

Quite an interesting question--YES??? Anyone care to hazard a guess about what the answer might be?? NO! Well that's OK because I was going to give it to you anyway. A raise is not a raise, when it's a "cost of living adjustment."

That's how the increases for our esteemed Legislators, Judges and Cabinet-level State officials, including of course "Fast Eddie," will receive effective January 1, 2008 are being justified. Well at least they didn't vote for such an outrageous thing. Wait just a minute--THEY DID some years ago, and to make matters worse, it was made automatic, presumably as a safeguard against inflation. Talk about covering your butts. We surely wouldn't want a repeat of 2005? Some legislators might actually LOSE their cushy jobs and the luxurious offices, all paid for by the taxpayers of Pennsylvania.

In case anyone's interested here's how the 3.5% "adjustment" breaks down:

The salaries of the Speaker of the House of Representatives and President Pro Tempore of the State Senate will increase by $118,896 each. The salaries of rank-and-file legislators will go up between $2,550 to $76,163, and this is just base salary, it does not include the "legislative perks" that could boost total compensation to almost twice the amounts indicated.

Our Executive Branch "officials," will receive an "adjustment" of $6,000, which would raise "Fast Eddie's" salary to $170,150. The salaries of the Attorney General, State Treasurer and Auditor General will go up to $141,565. The Governor's cabinet and members of certain state boards and commissions will also receive "adjustments" to their salaries, but those numbers were not given.

Lastly the salary of an Associate Justice on the State Supreme Court would be "adjusted" to about $181,000.

It's a real shame that with all the money being tossed around to those who deserve it least, some of those "adjustments" don't find their way into the pockets of those who put those so-called leaders in these high-powered positions--LIKE THE PEOPLE OF PENNSYLVANIA, but I forgot, that wasn't written into the LAW.

My thanks to the Lancaster Intelligencer-Journal for providing the fodder for another scathing posting.
