Vote None of the Above

There was a movie, some time ago in the early 80's called Brewsters Millions in which a lower income former semi-pro baseball player was challenged to spend a million dollars in 30 days and in the end have no assets to show for it and for this he would receive an inheritance of 10 million. In the midst of his 30 days, he notices that the two boobs running for mayor of his city were both crooked polititians and decideds that he will enter the race only to encourage voters to "Vote for neither candidate". Vote: None of the above

Now, I explain this only to set the stage for this particular discussion. For how long will we accept voting for the lessor of two evils in this country? Why should we? For decades I've listened to people explain to me that we need people of experience in the State House, in the Congress to be able to work the system and get things accomplished. (HUH??) What can you remember as being the last thing of substance that was accomplished by these bureaucrats? Yet we continue to re-elect them time and time again. What message are we sending them? - We hate what your doing and we're upset but we'd like to give you the opportunity to screw us for another 4 or 6 years so here's my vote? Of course you have those who don't vote at all which basically says the same thing.

The politicians today (and I include Republicans, Democrats, Libertarians et al) will say anything at all to get into office and then will do what they want to do regardless. Take Todd Platts from Pennsylvania for example. Mr. Platts paraded us with his (I will not accept the perks of the office) speeches back in 1992 when running for the State House and over time conveniently forgot all about the pledge. Now I believe he is enjoying the perks all paid for by the country's taxpayers.

How is it that a country whose people pride themselves on being vigilant and having a long history of fighting against tyranny let their ELECTED representation take such priviledge? We need to get back to electing people who will serve the country, not the tax revenue. Take away all the attraction of limos, PAC money, and the exhorbinant salary (which they vote each year to increase) and place the congress back in the hands of people who would do it for nothing.
