A resolution on the timetable for withdrawal from Iraq was initiated in Congress yesterday calling for a phased pullout of American troops beginning October 1, 2006
Among the resolution's sponsors is Rep. Walter Jones, a North Carolina Republican who voted for the Iraq war but now says the United States has done what it can in Iraq. I have to agree with Mr. Jones. I too was a firm supporter of our reasons for going to war against Hussein. He was ignoring sanctions and as it turns out the United Nations was assisting him in illegally eluding them in the Oil For Food program.
We now know that the intelligence that was provided to us was grossly incorrect and that this regime is not an immediate threat to our nation. Couple that with the minute to minute danger that our troops there are under and the numbers of injured and killed mounting, it is time that we acknowledge that we HAVE accomplished our goals in Iraq. 1. To remove Saddam Hussein, a ruthless dictator from power 2. Restore freedom to the people of Iraq and assist them in setting up a democratic process for elections.
It is time now that the Iraqi people take over and begin the course of patriots on their own. The nation of Iraq is too volatile under our current rules of engagement. Unless we are ready to colonize Iraq and do it immediately with a complete curfew and house to house inspection with martial law imposed - we need to return to America and let the Iraqi people take it from here.

Well we do agree that the timetable is not long enough.
I'M NOT TELLING YOU ARE WRONG.
IT IS MY OPINION THAT...
This region has been at war for centuries and no length of occupation is going to change the fact that factions across Iraq want control and are willing to kill to get it. What we are doing now is simply giving them all a target to practice on. I'd like to think that once we have a government in place and elections have had a chance to take hold that things would become more like they are in other democracies. However one only has to look at Israel and Iran to see how perverted the middle east's view of democracy is.
Whatever the timetable may they all be safe from harm.
Setting a solid timetable and steps for Iraqi control would do wonders for me - I'd like us to have their military ready to protect them by 2006 and have our people home 1 year later...
