What better time to discuss the process of citizen initiative and referendum than the Birthday of our Nation and our Declaration of Independence. This concept is truly what liberty is all about, and it is high time that our General Assembly gets serious about addressing this critical issue
Two years ago, as a result of gross arrogance and greed on the part of our so-called leaders in Harrisburg, the people rose up in righteous anger and told the powers that be that business under the Dome must change.
Out of that frustration and anger came Senate Bill 137 Printer's Number 182, which would amend the Pennsylvania Constitution to allow for citizen initiative and referendum in the Commonwealth.
This is a process whereby the People may propose statutes and amendments to the State Constitution, and to adopt or reject the same at the polls independent of the General Assembly.
There are many crucial issue facing Pennsylvania, such as repealing the slot machine gambling law, reforming our property tax system, repealing the compulsory agency shop law, and protecting the sanctity of marriage, just to name a few, and if the Legislature will not address these matters, then it is the responsibility and duty of the people to do so at the polls.
I encourage every citizen of the Commonwealth to contact their State Senator and urge him/her to support Senate Bill 137 Printer's Number 182.
